ChatGPT Ads — All You Need to Know at This Stage
This page changes as the platform does — access, pricing and policy are moving monthly.
ChatGPT Ads went from invite-only pilot to self-serve platform in under four months, and it's already crossed a $100 million annualised revenue run-rate. We've been stress testing it internally, and our honest verdict is simple: think Google Ads, 20 years ago. Raw, uncrowded, and full of upside for advertisers who learn it before the crowd arrives.
Here's everything worth knowing right now — including the limitations most write-ups skip.

What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT's responses, clearly labelled "Sponsored" and kept separate from the AI's actual answer. They only show to logged-in adult users on the Free and low-cost Go tiers — Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise subscribers never see them.
Two things make them fundamentally different from search ads:
No keywords
Instead of bidding on search terms, you write "context hints" — plain-language descriptions of your ideal customer and the conversations where your product is relevant. OpenAI's models match your ad to live conversations in real time.
The answer stays independent
Buying ads doesn't buy influence over ChatGPT's organic responses. If a competitor's product is genuinely the better answer, ChatGPT can still say so above your ad. Paid and organic visibility run on separate rails — but similar contextual logic, which matters.
The Timeline So Far
February 9, 2026
Closed beta launches in the US, gated to enterprise brands via major agency groups, with six-figure minimum spends.
March 26, 2026
Pilot expands to Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
May 5, 2026
Self-serve OpenAI Ads Manager launches in beta. The six-figure minimum disappears; entry budgets drop to as little as $25/day.
June 6, 2026
The UK becomes the first European market, via a managed beta.
July 2026 (now)
Open beta in the US; managed or rolling access elsewhere.
Where ChatGPT Ads Are Available
This is where the honest caveats start.
Fully self-serve: the US only
Any US business can open an Ads Manager account and launch.
Managed beta: the UK
There's no self-serve access yet — UK advertisers register interest and work directly with OpenAI's ad team, and early inventory is limited to a handful of brands. Rollouts are also underway in markets including Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico.
No confirmed date: the EU
GDPR and the EU AI Act have left continental Europe without a launch window.
If you're a UK or European brand, the practical move isn't waiting — it's preparing. Measurement setup, context-hint strategy and creative testing frameworks can all be built before your market opens.
What Can You Advertise? (And What You Can't)
Eligible categories
Excluded categories (currently)
For the iGaming and casino brands we work with, that means ChatGPT Ads is a watch-and-prepare channel, not a buy channel, for now. Regulated verticals always arrive late to new platforms; the operators who build their measurement and creative muscle early are the ones who move fastest when the category opens.
How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?
The platform launched on a fixed ~$60 CPM. The self-serve Ads Manager now supports:
CPC bidding
Recommended starting bids of $3–5 per click.
CPA bidding
Rolling out since late May 2026, letting advertisers pay on sign-ups or purchases rather than impressions.
Daily budgets from $25/day
The enterprise-only barrier is gone.
Early US CPMs have compressed significantly as inventory opened up, which tells you the direction of travel: the premium era is ending, the performance era is starting.
Ad Formats
Sponsored answer placements
Text recommendations with outbound links, below the response.
Shopping carousels
E-commerce brands sync product feeds to show dynamic images, prices and products.
Dynamic CTA cards
Larger formats pairing prominent imagery with customisable call-to-action buttons.
Targeting & Measurement
Targeting
Context hints (persona and use-case descriptions) replace keyword lists and audience segments. Geo-targeting in the US goes down to state, DMA and ZIP level.
Measurement: OpenAI has shipped a proper performance stack
JavaScript pixel
For standard and custom website conversion events.
Conversions API
Server-side event tracking — more reliable than browser-only.
Advertiser API
For programmatic campaign creation, management and performance reporting.
Privacy: conversations stay private. Advertisers see aggregate metrics only — never chat histories or personal profiles.
Our take: set up the pixel and Conversions API infrastructure now, even if you can't buy yet. It's the same server-side tracking discipline that pays off on Meta and Google, and it means day one of access is spent learning, not plumbing.
Why "Google Ads, 20 Years Ago" Is the Right Comparison
The pattern is familiar to anyone who was buying search in the mid-2000s:
Thin competition
Most advertisers are still watching from the sidelines.
A new skill that isn't transferable overnight
Writing context hints is a different muscle to keyword research — closer to briefing a salesperson than building a match-type structure.
Compounding early-learner advantage
Brands with strong organic visibility in ChatGPT's answers are already seeing cheaper placements and better delivery — paid and organic AI visibility reinforce each other, just as Quality Score rewarded relevance in 2006.
Rapid platform maturity
Fixed CPMs to CPC to CPA bidding in four months. The advertisers running structured tests now will own the playbook when everyone else shows up.
The advertisers who understood Google's auction early printed money for a decade. We think the same window is open here — it's just narrower and moving faster.
Should You Be On ChatGPT Ads Yet?
Depends who you are:
US brand in an eligible category
Yes, test now. $50–100/day is enough to learn from within a few weeks.
UK brand
Register interest with OpenAI and build your measurement stack while you wait. Managed-beta seats are scarce.
EU brand
Prepare, don't wait for a date that doesn't exist yet.
iGaming / regulated verticals
You can't buy yet, but you can be ready. Tracking infrastructure, context-hint frameworks and creative angles can all be built and tested against your existing channels today.
Where That's It Media Fits
We run performance marketing for regulated and high-growth brands across gaming, e-commerce and fintech — and we've been testing ChatGPT Ads internally since access opened. If you want a straight answer on whether this channel is worth your budget yet, what preparation actually looks like, and how to measure it properly from day one, that's a conversation we're having with clients every week.
Numbers never lie — and right now the numbers say this platform is early, cheap to learn, and worth understanding before your competitors do.
FAQ
Do ChatGPT Ads affect ChatGPT's answers?
No. OpenAI keeps ads separate from organic responses. Sponsored placements appear below the answer, clearly labelled, and paying for ads doesn't bias what ChatGPT recommends in the response itself.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost in 2026?
Self-serve advertisers can start from around $25/day. Recommended CPC bids are $3–5 per click, with CPM and newer CPA bidding options also available. Early premium pricing has compressed as inventory has opened up.
Are ChatGPT Ads available in the UK?
Partially. The UK launched in June 2026 as a managed beta — there's no self-serve access yet, and advertisers work directly with OpenAI's team. Full self-serve access currently exists only in the US.
Can gambling or casino brands advertise on ChatGPT?
Not yet. Gambling is an excluded category, alongside healthcare, financial services, political content and dating. OpenAI has indicated eligible categories will expand over time as its review systems mature.
How does targeting work without keywords?
Advertisers write "context hints" — descriptions of their ideal customer and the situations where their product is relevant. OpenAI's models match ads to live conversations contextually, rather than against keyword lists or audience segments.
How do I track conversions from ChatGPT Ads?
OpenAI provides a JavaScript pixel for browser-side events, a Conversions API for server-side tracking, and an Advertiser API for programmatic campaign management and reporting.
